Join me for a three-hour introduction to classical oil painting as we study the quiet beauty of a pear resting against softly arranged linen. This workshop is designed for beginners and those wanting a structured introduction to traditional still life painting.
Working in the classical realist tradition, students will learn how to thoughtfully compose a simple subject, observe subtle value shifts, and capture form through light and shadow. We’ll explore the richness of color in a single pear and the surprising complexity of painting drapery — learning how folds, edges, and reflected light create depth and elegance.
 
This session will be taught alla prima (wet-on-wet), allowing you to complete a small painting in one sitting while gaining foundational skills in:
 
Proportion and placement
Seeing and simplifying values
Mixing naturalistic color
Rendering fabric folds with clarity
Building form through careful observation
